Fluid SSB Creation and Management Walkthrough

Of the many things RIM does well with the Blackberry, it's considered one of the best features of the device. The blackberry is a workhorse of a device for e-mail, business, text messaging, and multimedia. However, the hardware and OS just doesn't satisfy the needs for many people. With the many OS out there and different hardware platforms, people have an amazing selection of devices to choose from. However, without a blackberry, these people will never have the pleasure of using BBM.
With a world growing more connected and filled with apps of all shapes and forms, why can't we have a Blackberry Messenger App for different platforms? RIM would probably be concerned about losing Hardware market share to other manufacturers if people could continue using this key feature elsewhere. In my mind though, RIM is missing out on a large chunk of population they could be reaching with such an app. People who want an iPhone, or Palm Pre, or HTC MyTouch are going to purchase this hardware regardless. Why not reach out to these people and increase growth in software shares?
An issue with putting an app on these different platforms is that BBM uses a unique PIN for each user. The solution in my mind is simple: a Blackberry PIN and Blackberry Messenger application package. Imagine users of all different platforms with the ability to have an unlimited, full-featured messaging application to connect with anyone and everyone. The only cost RIM would have to deal with would be development and disbursement. Everything after these costs would be pure and sweet profit. Also, with more people trying out a RIM developed software, I believe even more people would be willing to purchase a new Blackberry device after a pleasant experience with a different kind of RIM product.
Will it ever happen? Not on your life. Would it be amazing it it did? Of course. In my opinion, an increase in sales/software market share would be very beneficial to RIM, and also be great for the consumers to use such a wonderful product.
If Blackberry Messenger ever did appear in your AppStore, what would you be willing to pay for it? $5? $10? $15? $20? Nothing at all? Vote in the poll and leave comments to share your opinion!
